The week before Thanksgiving, things finally started to slow down a little bit at work – which is a good thing, because it was pretty busy otherwise! That Wednesday evening I went to Just for Giggles to do a burlap door hanger painting. It was a cross, and it was fun to do something different there.
That Thursday was our super busy day. Liam’s class was having their Thanksgiving feast in the morning, so my mom, Josh, and I met at the school to attend. The whole class would be singing songs, and they had a poem to recite – small groups of kids would be reciting each verse in the poem. But his teacher had also asked about 5 kids to do a special solo reading part too – she picked the best readers for that part, and Liam was one of them. She asked him first, knowing that he’s not known for being a fan of performances, but he assured her that he wanted to do it. I was SO proud of how well Liam did!! He read his part so well, he sang loudly, he did the motions in the songs…it was great!!
After the performance, the kids got to enjoy their feast. They did this right before they went to lunch, so I can’t imagine that many kids actually ate lunch that day. But it was so fun to get to be there and watch – they were all so cute!
Then that evening, we were back at school for the Third Grade Musical! This is what the 3rd graders have been working on in Music class, pretty much since the start of school. I have to hand it to the music teacher – she did a great job. Apparently she writes the whole thing, working with the 3rd grade teachers every year to come up with something that aligns with the social studies curriculum. She uses existing songs, of course, but the script is something she writes. The title this year was The Mystery of Our History – the premise was they were getting ready for an art show, and 2 weeks before the show, they discovered all the art is missing. So they have to go on a journey across America to find the missing art. Along the way, the kids use clues read to them on an iPad to tell them where they need to go next. Every single 3rd grader had some sort of special part – either a speaking part, a dancing part, or some other non-singing/non-dancing part (that’s what Zachary chose). His special part was holding up 2 state flags during the 50 States in Rhyme song (he had Arizona & Arkansas). The kids did amazing, and they all looked like they were having fun! It was such a fun day to be the parents of these kids!
On Friday, Josh & I got to have a date night! We had bought tickets weeks ago for Catching Fire in IMAX – I was SO excited!! This movie was so so good! I really want to go see it again. It may have been better than the first one – still trying to decide. It definitely wasn't worse than the first, that’s for sure. The movie is 2.5 hours long, but when it was over, I couldn't believe it had been that long. The movie flew by – it never felt like a 2.5 hour movie.
Saturday we headed back to Athens for the final time this year. We were excited, and sad all at the same time. It was exciting, because we love Georgia football and tailgating, and we were ready to see what kind of reception Aaron Murray got for his last home game. But it was sad because we hate when the season is over, and also all the bad luck this team has had this year, it just hasn't been a great season. But we still love it, no matter what. That’s why when Murray was getting carried off the field, there was this sense of “Are you kidding me???” in the stadium. It was unbelievable. He managed to survive all the ups & downs of this season, and then that happened. He tore his ACL and ran 13 more plays. Unbelievable. I hate that this happened to such an amazing player, and person. But the kids did really well, even though kickoff was so late. Liam took his usual 1st quarter nap. I was convinced he would just sleep through the whole game, but he woke up sometime in the 2nd quarter like he always does. That kid is crazy.
That Sunday we skipped church, since we had gotten home so late from the game. We stayed in our pajamas all day, and just tried to get stuff done around the house. Josh & I cleaned out the fridge and both freezers, and started working on the dining room table. At one point we told the kids to go read for the next 45 minutes. Zachary had no problem with that, but Liam really didn't want to…until we gave him one of the laundry baskets to sit in while he read. His teacher uses them in her class, so the kids will have their own space during independent reading time. He took right to it, and happily sat in his basket and read books for a while.
And then this happened later in the evening. Zachary was in the shower, and Josh & I were both upstairs. Liam was downstairs by himself.
We found out later that he was sitting on a hard plastic treasure chest. Ouch.
