Morning with Mom

Last week I got to attend Morning with Mom at Liam's school. In the spring they have Morning with Dad and Morning with Mom - it's a time for the parents to come in, and the children each show their parent 3 different activities that they have learned how to do. If there is extra time, they may show other activities. Liam's first activity was number rods. He had a wooden tray with 10 slots in it, numbers 0 through 9. He had to count out the appropriate number of rods to put into each slot, all the way to 9. Once he got to 9, I had to check to make sure he had done it correctly, and then he put a rubber band around each bundle. Once he had completed that step, he had to put the rods back in their original box, and then return all the materials to the shelf.

The next activity he showed me was metal inset. He had to trace a metal shape (he did rectangle) with one color pencil, then again with a 2nd color, and then he had to make a sort of vertical zig-zag inside the shape. The idea is that the lines are so close together that it almost looks like it's been colored. But he hasn't yet mastered that - his lines are still somewhat wide.

The third thing on his list was phonogram booklet. He had chosen one with words having the -ay sound. He read the whole book!

He finished all of this so fast that he had time to show me some other things. He decided to read some more words to me - he chose a packet of cards with words that had 6-7 letters in them, and he read them all! It was amazing!

After that, he wanted to sit in the chair in the reading corner and show me how he sits in the chair to read a book. And then he played the bells.

The last thing that he just HAD to show me was flower arranging. So each week, one child brings snacks for the whole class for the week. When it's your turn, the teacher sends home a list with items checked off that they want you to bring in. The list has things like bananas, apples, cucumbers, whole wheat crackers, cheese cubes, mini bagels, jelly, cream cheese, tissues, and fresh flowers. Last week was Liam's week for snacks, and apparently they did not need any more fresh flowers, but according to the teachers, he insisted on bringing in flowers. And then he insisted to us that they must be from Costco (for some reason, he LOVES buying flowers from Costco). He was so proud of those flowers we brought in, and he could not wait to show me flower arranging! He put on the flower arranging apron, and got all of his supplies out. Then he picked the biggest bloom left in the bouquet, and carefully cut it off with the clippers. He then trimmed it down to a small enough height to fit in the tiny bud vases they have in the class. He then slowly poured water into the vase, and put the flower in. The next thing he did was just so cute. He picked a doily off the shelf, and placed it on a table where another boy was showing his mom something. He then put the vase on the doily! I about died - a little vase of fresh cut flower on the table while you work - at school! How cute is that??

It is always a fun event, and I'm glad I have the opportunity to go into his classroom & see the things he is doing.
