I feel like I didn't write much about Liam’s baseball season
this year. Part of that is because they
don’t keep score, there’s not much to write about. But also part of it is I missed a good chunk
of his season this year. That’s the
drawback to having 2 kids who play. They
had a lot more overlap in their schedules this year than they did last year,
and since Josh was Liam’s coach and had to be at Liam’s games, I would always
go to Zachary’s games so they would each have one of us there. This will get more interesting next year,
when they are both in leagues that keep score…
Liam’s team was hit or miss.
They were a disaster in the dugout.
They were always climbing the fence or dancing on the bench. One time we even found one of the kids on top
of the dugout! They never cheered for
their team, and one kid always complained about the position he was assigned
to, unless it was first base. But when
they were on the field, they were pretty good!
They could all hit the ball pretty well – even the few kids who had
never played before. And they made some
pretty good outs in the field too. We
had two kids who made a pretty good pitcher-first base duo, and they could always
be counted on for an out or 2 when they were together. But since there was no score-keeping, it’s
hard to say how we stacked up against the other teams.
Liam could usually get a hit off of one of the pitches. He had to use the tee a few times, but most
of the time, he could hit a pitch. He
even made some outs (or helped make them).
He had a really nice out this past Saturday. Right now, his favorite position is pitcher
(even though the kids aren't actually pitching yet – they still have a kid standing
behind the coach pitcher). He made a
nice throw to first base and the first baseman got the out. He understands what needs to happen, and is
starting to “get it”, as far as when to throw to first base (vs any other
base).
He really lucked out this year with his team. Last year he only knew one boy on his team –
it was a boy he knew from school, but that wasn't in his class. This year, he has 2 other boys from his class
on his team, as well as 2 other boys who are in a different class at his
school. I think it’s more fun at this
age when you know the other kids. But I
also know form Zachary’s experience, that the longer you play, you start to get
to know some of the same kids from year to year, even if they go to a different
school.
He really enjoys baseball – he once said he likes it even
more than tennis! Both boys decided they
want to play summer baseball this year, so we’ll see how that goes. Hopefully I’ll get to see more of Liam’s
games over the summer, and in springs to come, because I really missed getting
to watch him play more often this year.
