Little Boy Blue Belt

Yesterday was karate graduation day.  They do them every other month, but it's still pretty fun when your child is receiving a new belt.  Zachary  was finally getting his blue belt.  He should have gotten it at the August graduation, but unfortunately for him, he decided not to take the summer camp karate classes very seriously, and his teacher ended up not recommending him to graduate.  He was pretty bummed about it, because moving to blue belt is a pretty big deal, and because of his behavior, he had to stay on advanced purple for 2 more months.  I really think he was ready for this - he's ready for a new challenge.  We got to the karate shool early enough for me to get a great seat, right up front.  They call each group out one by one to demonstrate their technique drill, followed by the kicks & punches they learned this past cycle.  Zachary was the first one out for his group, and was placed front & center on the mat.  We had told him to behave and set an example.  Here is his best serious face.

He did great!  He did his 27 techniques like a champ, and showed off all his kicks and punches.  His group even got to demonstrate some of the self-defense moves they worked on this cycle.

One all the kids in his group had gotten their new belts, they lined up on the mat.  At this point, the instructor has them wave their belts in the air so the parents can all get a photo.  Then he did something cool.  He came over to Zachary and gave him special recognition for earning his blue belt.  By going to blue belt, he moves into the advanced class.  He was the only one in this group receiving a blue belt, so it was kind of cool - he got a special applause from the parents just for him.

It was a great day to celebrate an amazing accomplishment.  Who would have thought that in only 2 years time, he'd be getting a blue belt & moving into the advanced class?  All at the age of 6!  We also took a moment to get a couple of pictures with his karate teacher, Mr. JP, afterwards.
