I can't believe Zachary turned 9 this past Saturday. He's one year away from double digits. Oh my. We started the morning off with our new tradition - we put $1 bills inside balloons - the same number to match the new age. They have to pop the balloons in order to get the money. In the past, we've hung the balloons, and they've had to use a knife to pop them. This time we thought we'd have him sit on them.
Originally he had talked about having a pool party. This was going to be great, since last fall, the HOA proposed building an actual clubhouse, that was supposed to be ready by the time the pool opened. But when April rolled around and they hadn't even started, I knew we needed to come up with plan B. We pondered a few ideas - it's hard now that he's older. A lot of party ideas are geared more towards younger kids. But he ended up deciding on a bowling party. This ended up being the perfect thing. It was inside (which was good, because it was pretty hot out that day). He also didn't invite a ton of kids, so it was really manageable. And since we only had 2 lanes, everyone was mostly contained in our little area. It was also really reasonably priced, for that small number of people. The boys had a great time! But the best part was when "Let it Go" came on the music system, and all the boys belted out the words! It was really cute.
As Zachary has gotten older, I am more and more amazed at what a cool kid he is. He is super smart, and he's also really funny. Oh - and he's "athletically gifted" too. How can I forget that part?? He's still a kid, but he is getting more and more self-sufficient (we just need to start teaching him to cook, and do laundry, and we just might be set!) He has also been saving money since January to buy a Kindle Fire HDX, and he is $5 short. Sometimes he frustrates us, but then other times I feel like we must be doing something right. It was a fun birthday and I'm glad that we got to spend it with him and his closest friends!
On a different note, we had a nice 2 week break from baseball, but then we were back at it yesterday - the boys had their summer evaluations. We debated before deciding whether to sign them up, because in the summer, they combine some of the age groups - they group 4, 5, and 6 together, and then they group 7 and 8 together. This meant that Liam would have to play with 4 and 5 year olds, and Zachary (having already turned 9), would be playing with 7 and 8 year olds. They were OK with this, and said they wanted to do it anyway. Josh was down on Liam's field with him, and I was with Zachary at his field, since both evaluations were at the same time. Zachary's line was moving kind of slowly, and while we waited, I got to talking with one of the other moms. Her son had turned 9 a few weeks ago, but, like us, had to register in the 7-8 year old group due to his birthday. They were debating about having him try out for the 9-10 group instead. They ended up hopping out of line, and headed down to the other field. We kept Zachary in line until we could get confirmation from the 9-10 field that he could try out down there. Right as it was Zachary's turn to start his evaluation, Josh called and had me pull him out. He had already gotten 1 or 2 pitches, but I had the coach send him off the field. So he evaluated for the 9-10 group instead. He did pretty well - he hit all 5 pitches (2 were pop-ups that the catcher would have caught, but the other 3 sailed nicely into the outfield). He did just OK in the fielding portion - he missed one of the grounders and 2 of the fly balls (in Zachary's defense, the coach threw 2 of the fly balls really short, and Zachary just couldn't get there in time). But all in all, he did pretty good. In this age group, they also do a separate (optional) evaluation for pitching and catching. Of course Zachary wanted to be evaluated for catching - he had just gotten his new catcher's chest pad and leg guards the day before from Josh's parents, so he was all decked out and ready to go! He didn't catch everything, but I'd say he caught more than he missed. He looked pretty good as a real catcher! So now we wait, to see if he makes a 9-10 team, or if he'll get places on a 7-8 team.
