On Tuesday, I went to school with Liam in the morning, since it was Morning with Mom. On Morning with Mom/Dad, you go in, and your child shows you 3 pre-selected activities that they have been working on. If there’s time, they can show you more when they finish. First, Liam read a book to me. It was about a white whale that got sick, and turned blue. In the end, he let out a big sneeze, and he was white again.
The next thing he did was a phonogram box. In this box were 4 cards showing different ways to make the “ay” sound (ay, ai, ei, and a-e). Then there were 4 corresponding booklets, that were filled with words containing that combination of letters. So he read all 4 booklets to me.
The last thing on his list was the teens board. In this activity, he gets 2 wooden boxes. In the big box, are 2 boards that read “10” all the way down. There are also wooden number tiles of 1-9, and the idea is that he goes down, starting with 11, and puts each number in order, so when he’s finished, he has 11-19. The small box contains beads, and each time he puts a number tile on, he is to place beads next to it that add up to the number he has placed. So for example, when he did 11, he placed a “tens” bead and then one single unit bead. When he got to 15, he placed a tens bead, and then a 5 unit bead, etc. He did a really good job!
He finished all 3 things so quickly that he had time to read 3 more books to me. I’m glad they do this. Sometimes he is very excited to tell us what he did at school that day, but most of the time, he claims to not remember what he did. So it’s nice to get to go in, and watch him in action, and see him get so excited to show you what he can do.
We are all very excited about him going to kindergarten in the fall! Our bank account is ready for a break, and it will be nice for him & Zachary to be in the same place again. But it’s also a little sad, because he has done so well there. This is the first place we’ve left, and been sad about leaving. When left our 2 daycares, it wasn’t a sad parting (maybe sad about leaving a couple of specific teachers, but the school in general, no – we were not sad about leaving them). But this time, we are sad. It’s going to be hard to leave, but I know they have more than prepared him for kindergarten.
