When we enrolled Liam in the Montessori School near our house we learned that they don't make a big deal out of birthdays - no class parties, cupcakes, goody bags, etc. I was a little sad, because we didn't do any of that last year at his other school because he was just 2, and most people weren't really doing stuff like that yet (it seemed to start around 3). So we were pleasantly surprised to get an email from Liam's teacher on Monday inviting us to come to the class for the special birthday celebration. We were asked to bring in a picture of when he was born, one of when he turned one, one of when he turned two, and one from now. And she said we could bring our camera too. We went to do that today, and although VERY different from anything we'd ever done before, it was really cute. All of the kids were in a circle, and they had 2 chairs set up for Josh and me. We started off by telling all about when Liam was born. While we talked, Liam walked his newborn picture around for everyone to see. Then his teacher handed him a globe, and he walked around the outside of the circle while the class sang a song about the earth going around the sun...and then Liam turned one! Then we talked about what Liam was doing when he was one, and the whole process repeated two more times until we got up to now, with him being three. Then Josh & I sat in the middle of the circle with Liam while everyone sang Happy Birthday in English AND Spanish, and then he blew out a little candle. After that, he went around the circle and each child either shook his hand or gave him a hug & told him Happy Birthday. A couple even gave him a little kiss. So cute! The whole thing was over in about 10-12 minutes, and even though it wasn't your typical preschool birthday party, it was fun. And Liam was just beaming as he walked the globe around the circle - it made us happy that he was so happy.
One of the teachers took pictures for us, which was so nice.

that sounds even better than a traditional party! I love that they each gave a hug, kiss, or shake. ;)
