When Zachary was about 10 months old and we discovered that he was a climber, we thought for sure we'd have a frequent customer card to the ER. We've been really lucky though - Zachary had staples in his head when he was 4, Liam had a burn on his hand when he was around 2, and stitches in his head when he was around 2 or 3. That's it - we've been REALLY lucky (knock on wood).
On Monday, Zachary came home saying his left pinky had gotten hurt. He said he was playing tackle football with a friend (which he admitted may not have been the best decision). He went in to tackle his friend, and when his friend went down, he came down on Zachary's hand, specifically his pinky. It looked a little swollen, but he was able to move it. You always hear that if you can move it, then it's probably not broken. So we gave him some ibuprofen at bedtime and called it a day.
The next morning the pinky was still swollen, and looking a little bruised. I decided to call the pediatrician's office and see what they thought as far as getting it checked out, or waiting to see what happened with it. They pretty much said it's never a bad idea to get it looked at, so I decided to go ahead & take him to the urgent care place. Right after school is a really good time to go - there was hardly any wait at all. They took some x-rays, and then the doctor came in and looked at it, and confirmed that there is a small fracture. Bummer. They splinted it, and said no PE or sports for about a week. We have a follow-up next week with a pediatric orthopedist, who will let us know if he's cleared for activities, or if he needs to extend it. I think by the time he's cleared to go back to sports & other activities, that he will be so ready. Zachary LOVES sports, so I know it had to be hard on him when he heard no PE, take it easy during recess, read a book after school instead of running around with his friends, etc. He's doing pretty well though - not much pain, but I think he's getting tired of telling everyone the story of how it happened. I think though that if he had to break something, his left pinky is probably the least disruptive thing he could have broken.
