This past Saturday was the UGA home opener. We had a really tough first 2 games – opening the season against 2 top 10 teams…Most teams like to open with a cupcake or two, but not us! We got to campus around 9:30 and started tailgating! We had cornhole and added ladder golf this year. But we kept it somewhat low key, otherwise. We had just picked up lunch from Bojangles (we had to have chicken!), but we had stuff to make kiddie cocktails (aka, Shirley Temples) for the kids, and our tent, and everything. It was a hot day. That’s all there is to it.
We left the tailgate around 1:00 to head to another part of campus to visit a friend of Josh’s. Then we went to the Dawg Walk, then we went to the bookstore. The boys handled all of that like champs, with very minimal whining. Liam wound up on Josh’s shoulders a couple of times, but other than that, they were great. We finally got into the stadium and took our annual photo in front of the hedges.
I will say that after losing to Clemson the week before, and after losing to South Carolina the past few years, the fans were as ready for a win as the team was. This was one of those games where we were on our feet almost the entire time. It was LOUD in the stadium – it was so much fun! Liam made it through kickoff, and then decided it was naptime. It’s become his “thing” to lay down and take a nap during the game. When he was really little, he would just whine himself out, but now he does it voluntarily. Almost like it’s expected. He slept through the rest of the first quarter and about 2/3 of the second quarter.
When he woke up, he was rested and happy (and claiming to be cold, hence the reason he's wrapped up in the blanket in the above photo!), and stayed that way for the rest of the game! He actually cheered and shook his pom-pom, and even more surprising – he never asked to leave!! Liam is famous for asking if it’s time to go, right after we get somewhere. But he never once said he was ready to leave! Yay! They lasted the entire game – amazing! Not that the game was over super late or anything, but when we first started bringing them to games, we were lucky if we could make it to halftime. Then we tried to make it 3 quarters. Then we would see how far into the 4th quarter we could make it, as long as the game wasn't a nail-biter. Now we know, they can hang for the full four quarters. It was funny though because we had lunch at the tailgate, and then they had Dippin Dots in the 3rd quarter – but we never had dinner (honestly, I wasn't really hungry, and nobody else was complaining of hunger either). As we walked back to the car (closing in on 8:00) Zachary said, “Hey! We never had dinner!” Haha – that boy will never let you forget to feed him! It was a fun game – partly because the Dawgs finally won, but also because of how good the kids did. We are looking forward to the rest of the season!
