Of course I wrote that last post about flag football, and how Zachary should hopefully be ready to go for the next weekend. Well, apparently doctors had other things to say about that. I took him to his appointment with the orthopedist last Tuesday, as directed by the urgent care center. They took a couple more x-rays, and then announced that he would be getting a cast. REALLY??? I saw the picture – it really wasn't that bad of a break. Thankfully they said it should only need to be on for 2 weeks, AND, they apparently now make them waterproof (if you want it – that’s an upgrade). So we sprung for the waterproof option so we wouldn't have to tape a bag on every night in the shower. What a pain! At that point we weren't sure what to do about flag football – this puts him out at least 2 more weeks (assuming they let him resume activities once it comes off). But, it turns out, it really didn't matter for yesterday. They were going to be playing on a grass field yesterday, but because it rained so much on Saturday, the grass was too wet & muddy, so the cancelled (which was a shame, because it was really nice out!)
Zachary took it well. He got to pick what color he wanted – of course he chose the brightest color green they had. And he has had fun getting people to sign it. We had not been home for 5 minutes after that appointment when he was already asking me to find a sharpie so Liam & I could sign it.
This whole broken pinky has been quite inconvenient. However, I will say that we are very lucky, and I really can’t complain too much. We are lucky that all he broke was a pinky, and not something bigger, or something he uses all the time (like, right arm, or a leg or something). We are also really thankful that both boys made it this long before either of them broke anything. The hardest thing for Zachary has been no sports or PE. After the cast went on, the doctor said he could do karate, but not sparring, and he still has to sit out of PE, and they said no ball or contact sports. He is going bananas not being able to throw a football around! We will all be ready for this thing to come off so he can get back to his normal activities.
